Akimbo.Black (or just Akimbo) is my Eminem, my Batman, my unexplained, creative outlet alter-ego. It started as a way to release creative energy while working with a few corporate clients, and quickly became a research, practice, and meditation on new aspects of design.
This project specifically, was the homepage design for the akimbo.black website that was awarded Honorable Mention for Homepage Design in the Webby's. It unfortunately was beat out by the launch page for the iPhone X...what are you gonna do. More process and ideation below.
The main idea for this page came about by thinking what users might be looking for based on the production of the 'foundry'. Without a specific 'funnel' or desired user journey like many corporate sites, the design hinged on discovery, exploration, and play—similar to the aim of the foundry.
Akimbo.black is a typographic persona created to escape the confines of economic design work. Speculating on visual forms, typography, and digital connectedness, the foundry needed a website that matched the playfulness of the work and attention-spasms of the studio.
The result is a grid, confessional-screen-like interface that immerses visitors in the typographic playground that is Akimbo.
