After a large donation and push to update the physical appearance of the Bootsma Bookstore Cafe, I was tasked with designing a new brand identity, with the help of student designers, to accompany the renovation. The identity needed to breathe new life into the space, encourage student engagement, and tie into the campus's growing suite of brands.
This project was an extension of the many projects that went on at Trinity Christian College to improve the brand image. To that end, the brand had to bring the cafe into the larger brand while also keeping the appeal to the neighborhood community.
Students were always interested in the different events and announcements the BBC had. The manager of more than 10 years made the space warm and inviting, if not cliche and quirky. All of these were things students loved about the cafe and also helped invite community members to the space.
To maintain this, we worked to create a set of icons of all the things students loved—coffee, leaves, books, Christmas, the local raccoon, etc. Then using those icons, we build a simple grid system and scaling rules to develop a flexible brand and logo for the cafe.
